The Pros and Cons of Online College

Are There Any Disadvantages to Taking an Online Course?

Continuing your education is an important step to ensuring your overall career success, but finding a college that meets your needs can be a challenging task.  As in so many aspects of life, there are both advantages and disadvantages to taking an online course, but by carefully weighing the pros and cons, you can decide whether online college is right for you.

Drawbacks to Online College

While the main drawback of taking courses online is that you must have easy access to a computer and the Internet, there are several other disadvantages for certain prospective students.  Because of the lack of structure and direct supervision provided by a traditional classroom education, online learners must be especially diligent about completing work on time and keeping up with their studies. However, students who desire a degree program that allows them to work independently, on their own time will flourish in the web-based learning environment.  Students who prefer face-to-face communication with professors and classmates, on the other hand, may favor traditional on-campus courses.

Benefits of an Online Education

Although there are certain downsides to pursuing an online degree, selecting a college program is a personal decision and your academic success depends largely on your ability to choose a program that is the right fit for you, whether online or on campus, and for many students the benefits of an online education heavily outweigh the negatives. The online learning environment offers unique features not found in traditional colleges, most notably the freedom to pursue your education on your own time and from any location.

As technology continues to advance, learning online has become more personalized than ever, allowing students to communicate with faculty through email, online chats, and even through video messaging.  With more and more progress in the realm of Internet learning, online colleges can provide an experience that blends the collegial interaction of the on-campus course with the flexibility and convenience of learning from home.
